When considering photographs of your newborn you have a few different types of sessions to choose from: birth, in-hospital, lifestyle, and traditional posed newborn sessions.
Contemporary Newborn Photography Sessions
Some photographers offer photography services at the actual birth of your baby. These sessions required the photographer to be on call during the period before and after the due date of your baby, and are priced commensurate with this need for instant availability. In general, birth sessions are documentary in style and completely unposed.
Birth photography captures the moments before, during, and immediately following birth. The imagery captured at birth sessions is very emotional, vivid, and striking.
A popular new alternative to birth sessions are hospital newborn sessions. Hospital sessions take place in the day or two following the birth. This is a great option for many families and is generally much more affordable than birth photography since they do not require the photographer to be "on call.". Also, hospital photo sessions can be more planned for when the family feels best to photographed.
The images your photographer will capture at an in-hosptial session will help you to remember all of the small details and little moments of your little one's first days. Common photographs include documentation of the baby's bassinet, tiny hands and feet, and first meetings with siblings.
Classic Newborn Photography Sessions
Most newborn photography sessions take place in the week or two following birth. The first type is an at-home lifestyle session. Lifestyle sessions are typically taken in the photojournalistic style and have only minimal set-up and posing. Lifestyle newborn sessions often involve the whole family and heavily feature the baby's nursery and living space.
Lifestyle newborn sessions almost always take place on location in your home. Your photographer will spend several hours with you as you and your family go about your new life with baby. These sessions capture wonderful moments between your family members.
The last type of newborn session is the posed newborn session. Posed newborn sessions take place in the photographer's studio and involve newborn-specific props. The photographer will capture images of the baby in a variety of different poses using wraps and specialty items to highlight the newborn and his or her family.
Posed newborn sessions generally take place between 6 and 10 days following the birth of your child. Most sessions are scheduled for mid-morning and will last between two and four hours. To facilitate a wider assortment of poses, in general the photographer and parents will work together to ensure that the baby is very sleepy during the session.
The best time to plan for newborn photography sessions is while you are still pregnant. The sooner you talk to your photographer the more options are open for you.
